General Carrots
Type: Biennial
Description: Orange, sweet, and crunchy
When to plant: Mid-April
Level of difficulty: 2-3
How to plant: Carrots are an easy project to start out with!
- Grab your pot:
- Clay pots need to be 13 inches in diameter and about 12 inches deep.
- Rectangular plant containers need to be 22 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 8 inches deep.
- Square containers need to be 13 inches square and 12 inches deep.
- If using a circular pot, plant in dots, like randomly. If planting in a square or rectangular pot, plant in rows, make the rows between 2-6 inches apart. Plant the seeds half an inch deep. Water gently. They should germinate in a week or so.
- When the plants reach a height of an inch, begin the thinning process. Take scissors and cut some of the plants to soil height or pluck out the plants. You want to have your plants be a half inch apart.
- Later on when the seedlings become two inches or so, thin them to be 1 inch apart. The seedlings that you thinned out should be big enough to eat.
- Sometimes a thin stem will be exposed, if so, just put a little more soil/peat around the base of the stem.
- In about two months, your carrots will be ready!
Tips/Facts/Uses:
- Use carrot tops for compost!
- Picky kids? No prob! Use grated/minced carrots in meatballs, then use the extra carrots and blend them in a marinara sauce! They’ll never know.
- This method of growing should work for most variety of carrots. If there are other varieties that need another style of planting, I will post it.
