How to plant: Mint is a yummy herb that is used in desserts, meats, and cooling drinks!
- Prepare the pot with soil, and plant seeds about half an inch deep.
- Make sure the soil stays moist, do not soak it. Mint loves soil that drains well.
- The seeds should germinate in about two weeks.
- Once they sprout, place them in a sunny spot on your windowsill, or under some grow lights.
- One the plants reach about 6in to 12in you will want to start to cut the mint ¼ to a couple of inches above the root for harvest.
- If your mint grows out too much, you can alsy cut the stems half way. Especially if you want to make it look nice!
- Make sure to harvest your mint sprigs before the plant flowers.
- To prolong the flowering and bolting, pinch off the flowers as they bud.
- Enjoy!
Tips/Facts/Uses:
- Mint seeds are poisonous. Mint can become noxious and invasive if not taken care of. Do not eat the seeds, and do not let your mint plant flower unless you are leaving it to die and grow again next year.
- Mint sends out “runners” which are roots that grow and spread very quickly, so make sure your pot has no cracks.
- Mint likes their soil to have a pH of 5.6-7.5
- Mint is vulnerable to mealybugs, whitefly, aphids (hey hey maybe you can plant chives next to this!), spidermites, and rust.
- Mint attracts bees, butterflies, and birds!
